X. Edward Guo
Dear Members and Supporters of the Asian American Academy of Science and Engineering (AAASE),
As I assume the Presidency of AAASE, I am profoundly honored to build upon the strong foundation laid by our Founding President, Yiguang Ju, and the Board of Directors. Their vision has created a vibrant community of scientists and engineers that I am proud to lead into its next chapter.
In an era where the Asian American community faces unique challenges, including the rise of anti-Asian hate and the limitations of the "bamboo ceiling" in leadership roles, the role of AAASE is more vital than ever. We stand as a united front to advocate for the rights, recognition, and advancement of Asian American scientists and engineers.
Strategic Goals of My Presidency
- Establishing the AAASE Fellow Academy: Modeled after the US National Academies of Sciences, this academy will honor outstanding Asian American scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of excellence. We plan to introduce annual forums for Fellows to engage in pioneering research, policy discussions, and mentorship programs.
- Organizing AAASE and Community Leaders Retreat: This retreat will serve as a strategic forum to align our long-term objectives with the current needs of our community. We aim to incorporate workshops on leadership development, collaborative research opportunities, and discussions on global scientific trends impacting Asian Americans.
- Launching the Inaugural AAASE Annual Summit: Our summit will showcase innovation, foster professional development, and address critical issues like diversity in STEM. We will include special sessions on career advancement, leadership training, and workshops on combating bias in the workplace.
- Hosting 3 Annual AAASE Regional Fundraising Dinners with Information Sessions: These events will be instrumental in achieving our fundraising goals, facilitating community engagement, and increasing awareness of AAASE’s initiatives. Each dinner will feature keynote speeches from distinguished members and highlight achievements and future projects of AAASE.
- Supporting the AAASE Summer Academy for High School Students: We plan to expand this program with more interactive workshops, mentorship opportunities with professionals, and exposure to a wide range of STEM careers. The focus will be on inspiring a passion for science and engineering while addressing the challenges faced by young Asian Americans.
- Establishing Student Chapters of AAASE in Major Universities: These chapters will foster a support network, providing mentorship, career guidance, and opportunities for research and innovation. We aim to build a strong community of future leaders well-equipped to excel in their fields.
- Strengthening AAASE’s Membership and Communication Infrastructure: Our goal is to enhance member engagement through a revamped website, regular newsletters, and webinars focusing on professional development, the latest scientific trends, and community-building activities.
Together, we can overcome these challenges and lead AAASE toward a future where the contributions of Asian Americans in science and engineering are recognized and celebrated. I am excited about what we will achieve together and am committed to steering ASE toward a new era of excellence and global impact.
We are looking forward to our shared journey.
Sincerely,
X. Edward Guo, Ph.D.
